International Jazz composer Paul Winter will premiere his new work "Flyways” in the Dead Sea, Israel

Paul Winter, the famous composer and saxophonist and one of the earliest exponents of world Jazz music, will premiere his new work "Flyways" on May 17, at the Dead Sea Nahal Zohar, Dead Sea, Israel.

The premiere, in the presence of the deputy prime minister of Israel Shimon Peres, will include The Dimitry Pokrovsky Ensemble from Russia, the Efroni and Sawa choirs from Israel and dozen of musicians from Africa, Europe and Asia.

Flyways is a musical celebration of the migration of half a billion birds along the Great Rift Valley from Eurasia through the Middle East to South Africa and back. Flyways will chronicle this extraordinary journey, using music of the cultures of the 22 countries over which the birds fly, interwoven with the actual voices of migrating birds, including cranes, eagles, bee-eaters, thrush nightingales, and many others.

"Migrating birds know no boundaries" is the theme for the project, which involves musical collaborations across cultures, concerts, and an educational program to raise awareness, awaken awe and wonder, promote peace, and assist the work of a range of local conservation and cultural organizations throughout the region. The Flyways project also supports efforts to designate the Great Rift Valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bringing together in common cause the 22 states of the Great Rift Valley.

Winter, the winner of five Grammy awards, has been motivated for the past thirty years by the vision of a musical-ecological community, and has followed a steady course towards his unique 'Earth Music', a vital celebration of the creatures and cultures of the whole earth. Music for the Earth was founded in 1976 by Winter as a way of using the power of music to achieve conservation, social justice and other ends.

Donna Karan will come to Israel to receive Shenkar College Honorary Fellowship Award

The Renowned International Designer Donna Karan will come to Israel in May to receive this year’s recipient of the Israeli Shenkar College Honorary Fellowship Award. The Fellowship will be presented at a Gala Event, Thursday evening, May 10, 2007 in Tel Aviv.

While in Israel, Karan will present a Master Class to Shenkar’s Fashion Design students. The American Committee for Shenkar College in Israel is setting up a scholarship in her name to provide funds to promising Fashion Design students.

A retrospective exhibit of Donna Karan’s work and design philosophy, “Journey of a Woman”, will open in the Lorber Galleries at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. The exhibit will be open to the Israeli public following the May 10 opening until June 10, 2007.

Honorary Fellows of the college are individuals who have left a significant mark in various fields, such as science, art, design, culture, education, business and politics. Former honorees of this prestigious award are Hans Stern, Professor David Samuel OBE, Suzy Menkes, Fashion Report for the International Herald Tribune and Silvia Venturini Fendi, Designer at the Italian Fendi Fashion House, Hans Stern, Professor David Samuel OBE, Lord Sieff and Alber Elbaz.
